technology and consultancy service provider has developed an innovative closed-loop fuel solution for global shipping that delivers a 92% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (GHGe) and OPEX savings of \u00a31.4m a year, per vessel.<\/span><\/div><p>The solution was defined during Expleo\u2019s feasibility study into clean power propulsion systems, funded through the Department for Transport\u2019s (DfT) Clean Marine Demonstration Competition (CMDC) and is detailed in the new white paper \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/expleo.com\/global\/en\/insights\/whitepapers\/clean-green-marine-the-race-to-achieve-zero-emission-shipping-by-2050\/\">Clean Green Marine \u2013 a breakthrough for global shipping.<\/a>\u2019<\/p><p>To meet the International Maritime Organisation\u2019s (IMO) timeline for carbon emission reduction, many of the world\u2019s 100,000 vessels will need to convert to low-carbon fuel by 2035 \u2013 making the development of a viable retrofit and new build system a high priority.<\/p><p>Expleo modelled its \u2018system-of-systems\u2019 solution on the multi-tasking Bibby Wavemaster 1, a vessel used to service offshore wind farms.<\/p><p><strong>Jonathan Taylor, VP of Marine, Expleo said<em>:<\/em><\/strong><em> \u201cOur solution uses <\/em><em>solid oxide fuel cell (<\/em><em>SOFC), technology which, although highly efficient and well suited to use in marine environments, releases a high concentration of CO<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/em><\/p><p><em>\u201cTo achieve the desired reduction in GHGe, we partnered SOFC with a novel carbon capture and storage system, enabling a vessel to use its captured CO<sub>2<\/sub> and green hydrogen to synthesise e-methanol.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p><p><em>\u201cThe green hydrogen in the solution can be produced at offshore wind farms, from surplus electrical energy or supplied in-port &#8211; ensuring the closed-loop remains as sustainable as possible.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f6bcf6f elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" And, as a replacement for diesel generators, it can easily be incorporated into new build designs offering up to 100% reduction in GHGe.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Expleo\u2019s innovation also delivers significant operational savings, with the study showing OPEX reductions of \u00a31.4m a year, per ship and a projected payback period of around four years on a retrofit, for the vessel used in the model.<\/p><p>The solution, developed for sharing with the open market, supports the DfT\u2019s goal to commercialise and accelerate the decarbonisation of the maritime sector. Expleo is now working with several partners to explore the scalability of this novel system.<\/p><p><strong>Taylor concluded:<\/strong> \u201c<em>This has the potential to help the world\u2019s shipowners achieve million-pound savings, heralds the introduction of circular fuel ecosystems and delivers a reduction of 92% in GHGe.
