And that means market pressures will become more acute in multiple areas \u2014 from improving environmental performance to adopting new tech to reducing time to market.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The solution can\u2019t be \u2018magic\u2019. No one can simply conjure up suitably qualified and experienced personnel out of thin air. Instead, marine businesses need to think cross-industry \u2014 and avoid focusing exclusively on the niche skillsets of their industry.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By considering candidates with fundamental engineering skills <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> digital skills, marine businesses can open themselves up to a far wider talent pool \u2014 and then train candidates with the required specialism. In fact, creating mixed teams featuring both specialists from marine sector and experts from automotive or other industrial sectors will foster the cross-fertilisation of skills.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It&#8217;s something we\u2019ve done here. We engaged <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/informaconnect.com\/lloyds-maritime-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lloyd\u2019s Maritime Academy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to deliver training to our professional mechanical engineers, so they have the domain knowledge to work with marine engineers in blended teams. This included upskilling them for digital so they had experience with industry-related technologies, such as Robotics, Data Analytics, and AI.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This led to improved design quality in the naval sector. While the marine teams had already adopted tools and methods such as CAD, FEA and CFD, for some aspects of the design process, the mechanical engineers with automotive and aerospace backgrounds developed this further. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By integrating engineering functions\u2019 data into these tools, the specialist marine teams were able to create a \u2018graphical database\u2019 to store information on manufacturing process times, tolerances, material data, suppliers, and costs.
