In London\u2019s iconic Gherkin building, Expleo held a fascinating panel discussion on integrating AI into enterprise organisations. Featuring use cases and valuable lessons learned, the event delved into the practical applications of AI, best practices, and its impact on people and culture.<\/p>

1. What is AI, anyway? <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The lazy definition of AI is: \u2018getting computers to do things that humans can do\u2019 – but that could also describe simple automation. Besides, this wrongly assumes that humans are the benchmark for intelligence. A more elegant definition is \u2018goal-directed adaptive behaviour\u2019. The key word here is adaptive, as the system can learn to make better decisions. In reality, very few AI systems meet this definition.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

2. Six ways to alleviate friction <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There are six applications that can be used on any friction across any supply chain in any industry to help navigate the complex world of AI safely.<\/p>

  1. Task automation:<\/strong> simple algorithms can drive a massive amount of value without the need for shiny new technologies like Generative AI and machine learning.<\/li>
  2. Content generation:<\/strong> Large Language Models (LLMs) give everybody the ability to create any generic content. (However, the true battleground is creating brand-specific, production-grade, differentiated content – and that\u2019s very hard.)<\/li>
  3. Human representation:<\/strong> this means replacing human beings with things that look and behave exactly like a human being. The next step is \u2018audience brains\u2019 that recreate how people perceive content, such as promotional material.<\/li>
  4. Insight extraction:<\/strong> The power in machine learning and data science is explaining predictions. By extracting insights about the world, you can make even better decisions.<\/li>
  5. Complex decision-making:<\/strong> Use a computer for decisions based on multiple factors (i.e. there are over a trillion ways to allocate 15 people to 15 jobs). Humans struggle to compute anything with more than seven variables.<\/li>
  6. Human augmentation:<\/strong> This last one sounds creepy, although LLMs can create digital twins (known as digital assistants) that are trained on an individual\u2019s personal and professional data.<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    There’s a huge amount of misunderstanding and misinformation associated with ethics and security. When deploying AI in production, ask yourself these three questions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    1. Is my intent appropriate?<\/strong> The key difference between AIs and human beings is that human beings have intent.<\/span><\/li>
    2. Are my algorithms explainable?<\/strong> The difference between software and AI is that AIs tend to be opaque in terms of how they make their decisions. If you make them explainable, then you make them more transparent, auditable and governable.<\/span><\/li>
    3. What if my AI goes right<\/i><\/strong>?<\/strong> Imagine the unintended consequences of overachieving your goal. How might you cause harm elsewhere?\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

      \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTo stay ethical and compliant, it helps to set up a responsible AI governance framework and make it very accessible so that people can reference it very quickly. This framework should be based on various AI regulations and updated as the regulations evolve. The advanced option is to create AIs that can test your products, content or services for compliance in different territories or filter for gender or racial bias. More generally, it\u2019s essential to have a human in the loop who will verify the output of AI and provide rational checks and balances. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

      5. Overcoming the highest hurdle <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

      The <\/span>toughest<\/span> challenge for AI is moving from the exciting <\/span>stage<\/span> of testing, <\/span>experimenting<\/span> and creating cool proofs of concept into the reality check of production. The AI application loses its novelty factor when it needs to deliver on value targets. How <\/span>do<\/span> you re-<\/span>architect your stack so that it can cope with increased demand<\/span>? H<\/span>ow <\/span>do you make <\/span>your data transformation layer <\/span>fit for purpose? <\/span>You will have made huge progress and be buzzing to kick on. <\/span>However,<\/span> w<\/span>hen the tyres hit the <\/span>tarmac<\/span>, you may need a big rethink<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

        There\u2019s<\/span> a temptation to see emerging technolog<\/span>ies<\/span> as a panacea \u2013 <\/span>and <\/span>also<\/span> a danger of misallocating the wrong tech to solve the wrong problems. Technology then gets the <\/span>blame<\/span>, when<\/span> it\u2019s<\/span> really a case of driver error<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

        W<\/span>hen implementing <\/span>an AI <\/span>deployment strategy<\/span>, you need to <\/span>identify<\/span> the most compelling and valuable problems<\/span> in your organisation<\/span>. <\/span>However,<\/span> don\u2019t<\/span> try solving the problem at the first attempt. Find a <\/span>target<\/span> area to improve and move quickly to show results. That momentum will <\/span>attract attention and <\/span>take you <\/span>forward<\/span> to bigger projects<\/span> and bigger budgets<\/span>. <\/span>Also, any pilot must tie back to the <\/span>current <\/span>strategy cycle<\/span>, or it will quickly lose funding to a higher strategic priority.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Your people <\/span>are invaluable for<\/span> identify<\/span>ing<\/span> frictions \u2013 but it could be that buying applications from an ERP or <\/span>acquiring<\/span> a value-driven start-up is a better way to differentiate your business. <\/span>A<\/span> prudent <\/span>CIO <\/span>might <\/span>hire a <\/span>c<\/span>hief AI <\/span>o<\/span>fficer <\/span>to<\/span> bring deep <\/span>expertise<\/span> and apply the right bets to solving the right problems<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
