The challenge
As one of the largest and longest-established banks in the United States, the organisation faced the challenge of governing an increasingly complex and rapidly expanding data landscape. More than 90,000 tables, views and reports needed to be catalogued, understood and maintained by a team of approximately 40 business and technical data stewards.
A key objective of the bank’s data governance programme was to improve the discoverability and reuse of trusted data and analytics assets across the enterprise. Users needed to be able to find existing data and reporting assets before creating new ones, reducing duplication and promoting consistency in decision-making.
The bank also needed to achieve these goals while working within limited governance resources, making scalability and automation critical requirements for success.
The solution
Expleo worked closely with the client to validate, refine and enhance its data governance approach through the use of external metadata and automated governance capabilities.
The first step was to enable the automated ingestion of technical metadata and establish end-to-end lineage at attribute level across a diverse technology landscape. This included cloud and on-premises BI platforms, analytics environments, cube stores, in-memory databases, big data platforms and the enterprise data warehouse.
To support this, Expleo deployed its Easy Connect metadata integrations, extending metadata capture across BI, analytics and big data platforms. Custom extensions were developed to address specific requirements, including report and data watermarking, enterprise security controls, scalability and high-availability needs.
The programme also introduced governance workflows designed to identify duplicate or redundant data assets and support the archiving of deprecated content.
In collaboration with the client, Expleo further developed a search API capability that scanned Collibra assets and returned results based on defined relevancy rules, helping users locate the most appropriate data and analytics assets more efficiently.
To support ongoing governance oversight, a compliance dashboard prototype was developed to monitor asset compliance levels and measure the effectiveness of governance processes across the organisation.

The outcome
The organisation established a scalable governance framework capable of managing nearly 100,000 enterprise data assets more effectively. Governance processes that once relied on manual effort were automated through metadata ingestion, lineage creation and governance workflows, improving productivity and confidence in enterprise data.
By making trusted data and analytics content easier to find and reuse, the organisation improved operational efficiency and reduced unnecessary duplication of reports and data assets. The introduction of workflows for identifying redundant content also helped streamline the estate through the archiving of deprecated assets.
Continuous monitoring through compliance reporting provided greater visibility into the health and effectiveness of governance processes, helping ensure that data remained accurate, discoverable and meaningful to business users across the enterprise.
