Support for the change of a reservation system (RARS2) of the Rail Delivery Group (UK)

A busy train station with many people walking and standing. An overhead sign displays information about tickets, trains, and services. Some individuals are sitting on benches, and others are gathered around the sign. The atmosphere is bustling and dynamic.

Challenge and context

A rail charity, the Rail Delivery Group, is planning to replace the current provider of the National Reservations System (NRS) and the underlying systems in the UK.

The deployment and transition of this new system is dependent on the commitment and adoption of the new Rail Availability & Reservation System (RARS) platform across the industry, including critical stakeholders such as: operators, Third Party Retailers and internal (Rail Delivery Group) teams involved in reservation based ticketing.

The Rail Delivery Group needed change support to help understand the impact of change on their stakeholder ecosystem.

The Expleo and Moorhouse team were engaged to deliver the change management for the RARS2 Programme. We interacted with a number of the programme’s key stakeholders across the rail operator community and the rail association body « Retail and Sqills » to identify the scope of the impact of the change.

Expleo and Moorhouse helped to:

  • Define and capture the vision for the programme change.
  • Identify and validate the impact for the various stakeholders.
  • Assess the impact of the change on each stakeholder group in terms of people, processes and technology.
  • Define how the benefits of the programme can be monitored and achieved.

 Outcome for the client

We delivered a comprehensive assessment of the impact of the change on the key stakeholder groups affected by the programme. This included a board-level presentation of the change impact hotspots, a stakeholder-specific change impact analysis and recommendations, and a change roadmap to manage its scope.

Following the presentation of our findings, the rail association body, the Rail Delivery Group, immediately embarked on a new phase of work to initiate change, based directly on our recommendations.
