Expleo and MERMEC expand their partnership for digital rail infrastructure

Engineering services provider and signalling technology specialist combine their expertise in digital interlockings, ETCS and modern command, control and signalling technology

Cologne/Munich, 15 October 2026 – Expleo and MERMEC Germany are deepening their collaboration in the digitalisation of rail infrastructure. The focus is on digital interlockings, the European Train Control System (ETCS) and modern signalling solutions. The partnership builds on projects the two companies have already delivered together. MERMEC contributes its product and systems expertise in signalling technology, while Expleo brings its engineering, testing and consulting expertise. The goal is to jointly support infrastructure operators and railway companies in modernising their networks – initially in Germany, and in the longer term internationally as well.

The expansion of the partnership was confirmed at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin, the leading international trade fair for transport technology. There, Alexander Kniessner, Head of Transportation Germany at Expleo, and Alessandro De Grazia, CEO of MERMEC Germany, met to discuss the next steps of their collaboration.

Digital command, control and signalling technology as the key to greater capacity

Europe’s rail networks face profound technological change. Digital interlockings and ETCS are regarded as key prerequisites for increasing the capacity of existing lines, making operations more reliable and simplifying cross-border traffic. At the same time, this transition increases the need for specialised engineering capacity – from planning through integration and testing to commissioning.

This is where Expleo and MERMEC come in. Both companies combine technology and implementation strength to deliver command, control and signalling projects efficiently and to a high standard of quality.

Grown out of joint projects

The collaboration grew out of initial joint projects and close technical exchange. In the process, it became clear that both companies share a common understanding of technical quality, innovation and partnership-based cooperation. Expleo and MERMEC are now systematically building on this foundation.

„The digitalisation of rail will only succeed if technology providers and engineering partners work closely together. In MERMEC, we have a partner that brings international experience in signalling technology and strong innovative capability. Our collaboration has grown through joint projects – built on trust and a clear shared goal: to help shape the mobility of the future. We want to continue along this path in Germany and, in the longer term, internationally as well.“ Alexander Kniessner, Head of Transportation Germany, Expleo

Complementary expertise

MERMEC develops solutions for signalling technology, digital interlockings as well as trackside and onboard ETCS. According to its own figures, the MERMEC Group is active in 73 countries. MERMEC Germany, headquartered in Munich, coordinates activities in Central Europe.

Expleo complements this technological expertise with engineering, quality assurance and digitalisation expertise as well as many years of experience in the transport sector. For customers, this means coordinated teams, clear interfaces and end-to-end support throughout complex infrastructure projects.

„The demands on modern rail infrastructure are becoming more international and more technically complex. Together with Expleo, we have the expertise and the capacity to support our customers over the long term in their digital transformation.“ Alessandro De Grazia, CEO, MERMEC Germany

Outlook: potential beyond Germany

The partnership is designed for the long term. In addition to the ongoing activities in Germany, both companies see potential for collaboration in further markets. The combination of local market knowledge, international presence and technological know-how provides the basis for this.

By expanding the partnership, Expleo and MERMEC are positioning themselves as a well-coordinated team for the digitalisation of rail. Customers benefit from combined expertise in signalling technology and engineering – with the goal of making rail transport safer, more efficient and more sustainable.
