Automated & trained parking – easy parking at L2+
Expleo successfully partnered with a German OEM to develop a highly automated parking system allowing electrified and ICE vehicles to park driverless on the street or teach them to park autonomously in a specific location via a mobile app. Building on our experience in automated driving, our ADAS Parking and Perception Teams were the lead system suppliers for this system at SAE autonomy level 2+.
Who is the client?
Our client is one of the world’s leading automotive German manufacturers.
What was the problem?
Systems for ADAS and automated parking will use, among others, multiple sensors (Lidars, Radars, Cameras…), to respond spontaneously to outside conditions and stimuli, such as road infrastructure, lighting conditions, traffic signs, lane markings etc. The challenge for this project was to fulfil the typical requirements of these systems on a lighter sensor set while ensuring highly reliable operation under various seasonal conditions and at different times of the day and year. The OEM selected Expleo as a partner due to our expertise in autonomous valet parking technology.
What was the Expleo solution?
The system is technically complex, with many components and subcomponents that must interact and complement each other to ensure the car takes the correct path every time. That is where a systems engineering and development partner like Expleo made the difference. Our teams were responsible for the complete model-based system and function development up to the ECU level – starting with finalising the customer’s pre-development state of the function continuing to series production.
How did that solution help?
Advances in technology are exciting, but they all need to work together. Our team covered the end-to-end development for this complex project, from identifying business needs and use cases to requirements modelling, functional development, component and system validation and ultimately series production. Key aspects included defining customer functions, developing functional and system architectures, specifying functional interfaces, and coordinating with subsystem suppliers and stakeholders. Rigorous verification and validation through component tests, HiL tests, subsystems, and vehicle tests ensured the system’s maturity and reliability. Additionally, for parts of the validation process, we used Expleo´ s own component and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) systems, along with our HiL interface which enables the direct transmission of imaging data to the processing ECUs within a test environment.
What were the results?
We are extremely proud to support the launch of this highly automated parking system that is commercially available – and can live outside of the test centre.
- Release: The project culminated in the successful realisation, release and homologation of the parking system, ready for deployment in vehicles.
- Functionality: The parking system met all predefined customer functions and performance criteria.
- Integration: The system was successfully integrated and coordinated with all relevant subsystems and stakeholders.
- Reliability: Rigorous validation and testing ensured high reliability and performance of the system.
